socialmedia

The importance of social media is growing by the day, and no artists – established or beginners – can afford to sit quiet. An artist these days doesn’t just want sales – but hits, likes and traffic. Here I will share with you some thoughts and ideas on social media for artists.

Let’s start with some basic concepts. Social media is both easy and complex, fun and boring, all at the same time. If you do it right you create the best possible framework for promoting your music. If you do it wrong, you’ll waste a lot of time and haven’t made a single new fan.

Back then – and now
Music promotion was a lot easier 15 years ago:

That said, music promotion today will only require your time and patience, not a penny for ads.

It is important to think of social media as something more than your casual Facebook browsing or watching funny cats on YouTube. Social media is a tool that you, the artist, use to communicate with you audience. Key aspect here is that you have to create content that your audience want to hear, read, see, comment, follow, like, experience. It is really that simple.

I think that too few artists use social media tell about their creative process, between each album release. Your fans will love to learn more about how you find inspiration, your instruments and the whole recording process. All of this will create an interests for your music and your products.

A Real Social Song
The biggest social media project in the New Age music genre is Enigma’s MMX Social Song. Here Michael Cretu asked his fans to help with different parts of the song, and participate in the creation process. This project gave us this great song (and video!);

My problem with this is that it was a mere project – not “real”, long lasting social media interaction. MMX The Social Song was not the beginning of Enigma’s new social media profile. It ended quickly and nothing more came out of it. This is not the way to do it; social media demands constant attention. MMX The Social Song did however show just how much talent and dedication fans have. You don’t have to run a band like Enigma to utilize the power of social media.

Social media is about giving. If you want hits and traffic you have to put in the hours, clicking and posting. But when you finally have built a strong online presence you can use it in any way you want. Your music will be heard, and you’ll know that you build this framework all by yourself.
