Kosmic T & DJ Taz Rashid – Wisdom Ways

Tanin Shunter – aka Kosmic T – grew up in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. Tanin’s first Hip Hop group began at the age of 15, called Lokal Motif. One of their songs – “Back Home” – has had almost 500k plays on Spotify and 100k plays on Youtube. The band split up after a few years. Tanin had a profound spiritual awakening (and sobering car accident) in his early 20s. He has been apprenticing with the Pachakuti Mesa tradition (PMT) – earth honoring wisdom way from Peru – for the last seven years. Kosmic T debuted with the album Seeds of Light (2015). Rise of the New Earth followed in 2021. He recently moved on a new piece of land with friends and started a retreat center dedicated to the manifestation of the New Earth called Star River Sanctuary, where Wisdom Ways EP was recorded.

DJ Taz Rashid has been producing and part of creating mindful events globally over the last few years as he mixes beats and rhythms of Love, Ancient New World, House, Devotional, and all the cosmic sounds. He plays guitar, piano, Native American Flute, didgeridoo and hand percussion. Recently he has been performing and DJing at events sharing the stage with global acts such as Xavier Rudd, Michael Franti, Trevor Hall, Sol Rising, MC Yogi, DJ Drez and Guadi. His vision is to be a channel to cause the expansion of all those around by tapping into the creative wisdom of the body and allowing them to feel, let go and awaken.

Wisdom Ways has a fascinating back story: 

“It was early spring of 2022 – I had been in negotiations for licensing rights for my upcoming EP Wisdom Ways and had just received the news that the costs of licensing far exceeded the scope of my budget. It was a disappointing blow – but I trusted that for whatever reason this was how Wisdom Ways wanted to come into the world – and I moved forward with a free album launch as a gift to my friends and fans,” Tanin Shunter writes.

 

“Fast forward to winter of 2023. I had someone reach out to me through my website asking when Wisdom Ways would be coming to Spotify. I told this person (who had a Spirit Science email) that it was not meant to be due to the reasons mentioned earlier. In communicating with this gentleman, I came to discover that he was none other than the creator of Spirit Science himself! And that he was a big fan of Kosmic T… This opened the door for us to discuss collaborations possibilities.”

 

“If the original Wisdom Ways release had happened how “I wanted it to” in the beginning – this opportunity for a collaboration with Taz would not have opened up. Who’d of thought that things “not going my way” would have BEEN THE WAY all along! Sometimes us not getting what we want is because life has something way more magical in store – beyond what we could ever dream up ourselves – and when we accept that and dare to trust the quiet voice within our hearts – a whole new world of magic, beauty and possibility begins to reveal itself to us,” concludes Shunter. 

 

The EP opener is called Spirit of the Land. In less than 30 seconds, we are introduced to Kosmic T’s rap style, artistic expression and humanitarian mission, no less. Present are also the “wild and free” spirits, which are friendly and here to guide us along. Kosmic T’s wholesome style makes me take it all in without any hesitation. It is enigmatic and straightforward at the same time. Spirit of the Land is a terrific EP opener!

The title track is, hands down, amazing!! The introduction to Wisdom Ways is sublime, perfect even. The “I am” is very empowering. The song showcases all aspects of Kosmic T’s talent; the well-crafted melody, the hard-hitting yet friendly rapping, the satisfying build-up and interesting and enigmatic storytelling.

Next out is Freedom Fire. It is a quite hard-hitting hit piece, illustrating that change requires something from us. At the same time, it answers what freedom really is and the difference between our mortal bodies and immortal souls. It is deeply inspiring! Temple Within further refines this idea. I love its mysterious sound. It is a really catchy song, and I find myself putting it on replay again and again. Rainbow Warriors – which we know from the album Rise of the new Earth – is a call to action, armed with ancient wisdom.

The EP closer is the reflective Born of Ashes. It feels like a comment on the current state of the world and the problems we face every day. Deep down though, it is a song about community, faith and “walking together”. In short; a timely message indeed.

Uplifting and heart-warming, complex yet easy-going, Kosmic T and DJ Taz Rashid have delivered a fantastic EP! The Wisdom Ways EP has a genre-defying expression as it paves the way for other artists to follow in the unlikely mix of Hip Hop and New Age music. It might sound like a cliché, but this is really an EP that has the potential to change the world. Its back story is also inspiring on many levels. The motto is: never give up!

“There is a wisdom of the head, and a wisdom of the heart,” Charles Dickens said. Now, thanks to Kosmic T and DJ Taz Rashid, there are also Wisdom Ways.
