Clannad is now out on their US tour. Local Connecticut newspaper CTpost.com has done an interview with Noel Duggan. After USA, a Europe tour is next in late February and March. See information about all concerts here.
Here is the opening of the interview:
Q: What can Clannad fans who have never seen you live expect in Ridgefield?
A: They can expect to hear songs from right across our 40 years as a band and a real mixture of styles. People who only know us for our ethereal pieces, like “Harry’s Game,” can be surprised at how lively a Clannad show is.
Q: What do you think it is about Irish music that draws people to songs that were, in some cases, written centuries ago?
A: The songs were constructed to tell a story or a message and there was nothing contrived or artificial about how they were put together. That probably has something to do with how they stand the test of time.
Q: Clannad obviously combines traditional music with influences like rock and pop. When you were starting out was their resistance to that in the traditional Celtic music world?
A: When we started out there wasn’t really such a thing as a Celtic music world. That genre sort of developed after people didn’t know where to place us. In traditional Irish music circles, where we first played into, there was resistance to us, as we didn’t obey all the usual rules that applied. Things like double bass and even vocal harmonies were frowned upon in those circles.
