2002 – A World Away

2506

2002 returns with their 18th full-length album, A World Away. The six vocal and four instrumental songs are new and all original, and cover much of 2002’s vast sonic palette – from progressive and pop new age, to their neo-classical and ambient roots. Thematically, the album is a cosmic love story, of kindred spirits traveling together through many times and many worlds, becoming lost and separated from one another, and finally reunited.

2002 is a new age group composed of Pamela, Randy, and Sarah Copus. Founding members and multi-instrumentalists Pamela and Randy met in high school in the theater department. Their musical paths diverged throughout college as both explored a wide variety of musical styles, instruments, and bands including everything from jazz to industrial rock. Coming back together after college, they ultimately left their respective bands to form the progressive new age band they dubbed “2002”.

Entering the music scene in 1992 as a duo, their first album Wings was a lush, ambient tapestry garnering massive sales and critical acclaim. They have gone on to release 17 albums as 2002, plus a compilation of their best songs – The Sacred Well: The Best of 2002. Their daughter Sarah, who became an integral member of the group a few years ago, released her first solo album Moorland Winds in 2017.

2002 has charted eleven albums on the Billboard New Age Charts. This Moment Now won the COVR award for Best New Age Album in 2004. 2002 was named amongst the top new age artists in Billboard’s 2003 “Year in Review” issue (December 2003), a list that also featured Yanni, Mannheim Steamroller, Jim Brickman, George Winston, and Enya. They most recently won Best Vocal Album from the ZMR Zone Music Awards in 2015.
The themes of several of 2002’s albums are deeply rooted in mythology. Wings is based on the Greek legend of Icarus. Savitri and The Emerald Way are both inspired by the ancient Hindu story of Savitri and Satyavan from the Mahabharata. Land of Forever is a ballad of the mystic island of Tír na nÓg, an Irish legend.

Pamela, Randy, and their daughter Sarah record all their music at their state-of-the-art studio, Galactic Playground Music. Randy plays piano, electric cello, guitar, bass, and keyboards. Pamela plays flutes, harp, keyboards, and a wind instrument called a WX5. Sarah sings and plays Celtic harp, violin, baritone ukulele, piano, and Irish whistle. 2002 provide all of the vocals on their albums, recording their voices many, many times and layering them to create a “virtual choir” with a celestial, angelic quality. The vocals also have many dimensions, as words and chants in Sanskrit, Spanish, Gaelic, Latin and Japanese, representing sacred traditions throughout the world, can be heard on their albums.
